Introducing the Bugout® Vapyr™: A New Chapter in Ultralight EDC

When the Benchmade Bugout® launched in 2017, it did something rare: it changed the way people thought about lightweight knife design. Such knives existed before it, but the Bugout® proved that ‘ultralight’ did not have to mean ‘under-powered.’ It became a reference point, not just a popular knife.

The Bugout® Vapyr™ is the next step in that story. Built on the same design principles that made the platform trusted by daily users, outdoor enthusiasts, and minimalist packers alike, it refines the formula with a profile that’s 33% thinner than before, building off the liner-less construction of the award-winning 748 Narrows. Lightweight black anodized aluminum scales jacket the first MagnaCut® blade dropped into the inline Bugout® family. The result is a more streamlined, durable, and capable carry, one that continues to push the platform forward without losing what made it essential in the first place.

The Bugout®: Redefining What Lightweight Means

At its core, the Bugout® was built to rethink a common belief in the knife world: that strength and weight had to go hand in hand. Where many designs relied on mass to signal durability, the Bugout® took a different approach, using smart engineering to deliver dependable performance without unnecessary bulk.

The goal was simple: create a full-size knife that felt reliable in hand, yet nearly unnoticeable in the pocket. That balance came through deliberate choices, a thinner blade for efficient cutting, lightweight handle materials to reduce carry weight, and the AXIS® lock for consistent, secure performance.

In practice, the Bugout® quickly became a natural fit for everyday carry, outdoor use, and travel, where reducing weight without giving up reliability makes a real difference. The same thinking extended into the Mini Bugout®, reinforcing that this wasn’t just a single product, but a design approach.

From there, the platform kept moving. The Bugout® CF-Elite®, the Carbon Fiber Bugout®, and the Bugout® Aluminum each brought something distinct without changing what the platform stands for, evidence of a foundation worth continuing to build on. The Vapyr™ is the most recent expression of that commitment.

Introducing the Bugout® Vapyr™

The Bugout® Vapyr™ builds on everything that defines the platform, but refines it in ways that are immediately noticeable in hand and in pocket. Rather than reworking the formula, it sharpens it, reducing weight where possible, strengthening where it matters, and introducing materials that elevate overall performance.

One of the most significant updates is the introduction of MagnaCut® steel into the inline Bugout® family. Known for its balance of edge retention, toughness, and corrosion resistance, it brings a more well-rounded performance profile to a knife designed for daily use across a wide range of environments. It holds up to more abuse, it resists corrosion and wear, and it performs consistently without requiring constant attention.

The handle marks the true step forward for this design. Thanks to the engineering innovations undertaken to develop the 748 Narrows™, we’ve been able to remove the liners from the standard AXIS® Lock mechanism and pivot to our advanced torsion spring variant of the technology.

Coupled with light but durable 6061-T6 aluminum, the Bugout® Vapyr™ is 33% thinner, a genuine difference for anyone who carries daily and notices what is in their pocket, bringing the total weight to 1.72 oz and making the Vapyr™ the most pocketable configuration the platform has offered. Taiga Green accents carry the design forward visually, signaling the evolution without overstating it.

Taken together, these changes represent exactly what the Bugout® family has always been about: deliberate improvement, grounded in how the knife is actually used.

Built for the Way People Actually Carry

The Bugout® Vapyr™ is built for everyday use, from opening packages and light prep to general utility, while remaining comfortable to hold, use, and carry throughout the day. Its lightweight, streamlined design makes it easy to take anywhere, whether in your pocket, bag, or part of a minimal kit.

That balance of performance and portability is what defines it. It is a knife built for consistent use across daily routines, travel, and time outdoors, one that earns its place in the rotation without a second thought.

Why the Bugout® Still Leads the Category

When the Bugout® launched, it challenged an assumption the knife industry had held for years. It proved that a full-size, fully capable folding knife could weigh under two ounces without sacrificing the dependability or ergonomics that daily carry demands. That was not a small claim in 2017, and the market responded accordingly.

In the years since, the Bugout® has become a reference point; the knife against which other ultralight designs are measured. That kind of staying power does not come from marketing; it comes from a design that was right the first time and has only been refined since. The philosophy behind it remains unchanged: focused engineering, purposeful material choices, and a clear sense of who the knife is for. Those qualities do not go out of style.

The Work Continues

The Bugout® Vapyr™ is the clearest expression yet of Benchmade’s approach to design: refine what works, improve where it matters, and continue moving forward with purpose. It builds on a proven platform, not by changing direction, but by focusing it through better materials, more precise construction, and thoughtful updates that enhance how the knife performs and carries over time.

That same mindset runs through everything Benchmade designs and assembles in Oregon, USA. Designs are not treated as finished, but as foundations to build on, evolving through real use and continuous refinement. The focus remains consistent: creating tools that hold up over time, carry comfortably, and continue to improve through thoughtful materials and ongoing refinement.
